On September 8, 2022 Queen Elizabeth II passed away at the age of 96. The world is mourning her death. People everywhere are talking and writing about her reign, her life and her character. She was Britain’s longest reigning monarch, reigning for 70 years. She was the head of the Church of England. She was a mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She is described as hospitable, knowledgeable and kind. Headlines in newspaper articles read “Queen Elizabeth II, an embodiment of courage, dignity and honor.” And, “Queen Elizabeth II was a beacon of dignity and morality that citizens everywhere long for in their leaders but rarely get.”
However, most importantly these are some of the things said about her faith in Jesus Christ:
- she reigned on the British throne for 7 decades while relying on Jesus Christ, the King of kings
- she was devoted to the King she served
- she had a steadfast faith in Christ
- Billy Graham and the Queen had a friendship built on a shared love for Jesus Christ and belief in God’s Word
These are some of the many things the Queen has said about Jesus Christ:
- “Throughout my life, the message and teachings of Christ have been my guide and in them I find hope.” (Letter to the Lambeth Conference from Queen Elizabeth II, 2022)
- “To many of us, our beliefs are of fundamental importance. For me, the teachings of Christ and my own personal accountability before God provide a framework in which I try to lead my life. I, like so many of you, have drawn great comfort in difficult times from Christ’s words and example.” (Christmas message, 2000)
- “I know just how much I rely on my own faith to guide me through the good times and the bad. Each day is a new beginning. I know that the only way to live my life is to try to do what is right, to take the long view, to give of my best in all that the day brings, and to put my trust in God.” (2002)
There is a book entitled The Servant Queen and the King she serves (Mark Green, April 2016). It is a tribute for Her Majesty’s 90th birthday. The forward of the book is written by Queen Elizabeth II herself. In part of the forward she writes, “I have been-and remain-very grateful to you for your prayers and to God for His steadfast love.” And, “I have indeed seen His faithfulness.”
Now, let’s take a look at what the bible says about the King Queen Elizabeth served, about the King we who have been born again serve -Jesus, King of kings and Lord of lords. In the scriptures Jesus the King has been written about (Jn 12:15), sang about (Ex 15:1-18; Rev 15:3-4), and prophesied about (Ps 47; Zech 9:9). Jesus Himself declared that He was King (Jn 18:37).
I encourage you to read and meditate on these scriptures from the book of Revelation.
“The ten horns which you saw are ten kings who have received no kingdom as yet, but they receive authority for one hour as kings with the beast. These are of one mind, and they will give their power and authority to the beast. These will make war with the Lamb, and the Lamb will overcome them, for He is Lord of lords and King of kings; and those who are with Him are called, chosen, and faithful.” (Rev 17:12-14 NKJV)
Now I saw heaven opened, and behold, a white horse. And He who sat on him was called Faithful and True, and in righteousness He judges and makes war. His eyes were like a flame of fire, and on His head were many crowns. He had a name written that no one knew except Himself. He was clothed with a robe dipped in blood, and His name is called The Word of God. And the armies in heaven, clothed in fine linen, white and clean, followed Him on white horses. Now out of His mouth goes a sharp sword, that with it He should strike the nations. And He Himself will rule them with a rod of iron. He Himself treads the winepress of the fierceness and wrath of Almighty God. And He has on His robe and on His thigh a name written: KING OF KINGS AND LORD OF LORDS. (Rev 19:11-16 NKJV)
Jesus is King of kings and Lord of lords. He has power, authority and dominion over all creation. He conquers all and is triumphant over all because He is King of kings and Lord of lords. He is faithful, true and just. He is coming back to judge the world and establish His everlasting kingdom where He will rule and reign as King forever!
Those of us who have been born again by the Spirit of God, have been delivered from the power of darkness and transferred into the Kingdom of His Son. (Col 1:13) Jesus is King of the kingdom we belong to. Think about that! Jesus is King! He is to be feared, worshipped, honored and served!
Queen Elizabeth II knew her King Jesus. She served Him, relied on Him, and lived her life according to His ways to the best of her ability. She spoke openly about Him. She wrote about Him. She worshipped Him, Jesus-King of kings and Lord of Lord’s.
What about you?
There is a song entitled Come Now Is the Time to Worship. The chorus says, One day ev’ry tongue will confess You are God. One day ev’ry knee will bow. Still the greatest treasure remains for those, who gladly choose You now.
When Jesus returns, every knee will bow to the King and confess that He is God. For those of us who know and choose Him now, let’s agree to daily love, worship, fear, honor, follow and serve our King Jesus-King of kings and Lord of lords!
“He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches.” (Rev 2:7 NKJV)
